Story: Snorkelling the Rowley Shoals
Episode: 14
Presenters: Trevor & Will Cochrane
Air Date: 24th of May
Trevor and Will dive into the pristine waters of the Rowley Shoals, one of the world’s most spectacular reef systems.
- Located 300 kilometres off the coast of Broome, the Rowley Shoals are regarded as one of the world’s premier destinations for scuba diving and snorkelling.
- The reef system is made up of three coral atolls—Clerke, Mermaid and Imperieuse—surrounding crystal-clear lagoons teeming with marine life.
- Trevor and Will explore the underwater world, surrounded by vibrant coral formations, tropical fish, reef caves and untouched marine ecosystems.
- Encounters with species such as Maori Wrasse, Bluebone Groper and nurse sharks highlight the incredible biodiversity found throughout the shoals.
- Unlike volcanic atolls such as Christmas Island or the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, the Rowley Shoals formed from an ancient fringing reef along Australia’s continental shelf.
- Rising sea levels over thousands of years allowed the corals to continue growing, creating one of the most pristine reef environments in the Indian Ocean.
- Accessible only by a small number of expedition vessels, the Rowley Shoals offer a rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience one of Australia’s most untouched marine wonders.
