Trevor finds some of Kalamunda’s hidden gems for finer wine-and-dine experiences for the festive season.

• 30 mins from Perth’s CBD, in the valleys behind Kalamunda lies a secret getaway just waiting to tickle your tastebuds and have you forget about the stresses of city life. Hainault, Plume and Myattsfield are just three of the hidden gems.
• Myattsfield offers a large selection of wines for tasting (up to 15). Encompassing some alternate varietals such as Durif, Vermentino, Tempranillo and Montepulciano. Enjoy a picnic in the grounds with views over the vineyard and down the Carmel Valley.
• Montepulciano is the latest addition to the Myattsfield range: Good natural acid and tannin levels combined with attractive dark fruits and high spicy notes make this an ideal match for Myattsfield. The results have been very encouraging with their first release winning Gold and Trophy at the Perth Hills Wine Show.
• New owners at Plume Estate invite you to try their award winning wines with some tapas from the deck that overlooks the valley below. Some of the best views in the Valley.
• The cellar door offers wine tastings, and a seated area where Anita, with much flair and friendliness hosts and serves share plates, such as Plume platters, Flammkuchen, and a range of seasonal inspired dishes which Bianca masterfully crafts from the freshest local produce and ingredients, some sourced from the veggie garden and chicken coop at Plume Estate.
• At 400m above sea level, Hainault is the highest altitude vineyard in WA. This means it is generally 3 – 4C cooler than Perth temperatures, when coupled with soils of gravelly loam over clay, provides perfect conditions for growing quality wine grapes.
• 12.5 acres of vines grow 5 classic French varieties of Semillon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and a little known white Gewurztraminer.
