• Broome’s Japanese cemetery is the final resting place of 919 Japanese divers who lost their lives while working in the industry.
• Japanese divers were a huge part of developing the Pearling Industry
• in Broome back in the 1880’s - many of them leaving their homeland to settle in Broome.
• The Japanese were only one of the major ethnic groups who flocked to Broome to work on the luggers or the shore based activities supporting the harvesting of oysters from the waters around Broome.
