Pinjarra, an hour’s drive to the south of Perth, it is such a pretty place to visit, with a lot of history on show and some you need to search a little harder to discover. While grand homes like Edenvale with their picturesque gardens are just exquisite, today we show you how the first people to call Pinjarra home used to live, share some of their traditional tucker that is hidden in plain sight and talk about a story once dubbed the Battle of Pinjarra… by the winning side.

• Traditional owner Karrie-Anne is passionate about her culture, from the moment she welcomes visitors to Bindjareb Park you can tell this is a pretty special experience. First up is food shopping Noongar style, while there is bush tucker growing naturally everywhere Karri-Anne is also growing native tucker that she can harvest to share with visitors. The traditional tucker on the lunch menu today is lemon myrtle crusted squid rings, pepper berry roasted and macadamia satay
• Bindjareb park stretches over 15 acres, and it's a block of land that traditional owners are developing to help them tell their story, using the talent of local artists to explain their culture. The tour take us to a location on the banks of the Murray river and tells a story that puts this peaceful scene at the heart of one of the bloodiest massacres in Western Australia; as we walk through the bush Karrie- Anne plays an audio recording that brings the horrific story to life.
• The memorial site stands as a symbol to Aboriginal people across Australia whose people lost their lives and land in lesser known massacres, knowing their people didn’t just give up. Now after all these years, Bindjareb park wants to share the story of these people’s existence and inform people of the 1834 Pinjarra massacre.
• Bindjareb Park nature sanctuary is home to a number of wildlife including rare bird species such as the Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo. So, take an educational walk-through bushland and learn about traditional uses of plants, watch films of local history and visit the site of remnants of an Aboriginal Reserve and share in the dreamtime and creation stories of local culture.
