Episode: 9
Title: Wheatbelt Weekend to Wave Rock
Broadcast: April 1st 2018
Presenter: Chrissy Morrissy

There’s nothing like a weekend away. Today Chrissy heads four hours South East of Perth to Wave Rock. Three hours into your journey you have the choice to either carry straight on or take a slight detour through the country town of Koolan, famous for its annual bush races.

  • The annual bush races are inspiration for an unusual open-air art gallery that keeps both the locals and visitors entertained.
  • There are over 70 of these creations and every year that number just gets added to.
  • The tin horse highway as it’s known, is a fantastic place to stop, look, take pictures or you can enjoy the statues from your car.
  • Before you know it, you are at Hyden, home to one of Australia’s best waves.
  • 100 meters long and 15 meters tall it’s a great place to take pictures as it looks just like a breaking wave, no need for a surfboard on this one!
  • But it’s not the only rock tourism in this area, there is also Hippo’s yawn, which looks just like a yawning hippo, and Malkers Cave, which is covered with more than 50 ancient rock paintings with a very interesting story!
  • Back into town, you’ll come across the local salt pond, fed by underground water, make sure you bring your bathers!
  • It has been known for its healing benefits from itchy skin, to aching muscles and the locals swear by it!
  • This place is perfect to enjoy a western Australian sunset, what a way to spend a weekend.
