Many of the islands off of the Pilbara coast are rich in history, biological diversity and situated in one of the most spectacular coastal areas you will ever see. In this segment Trevor takes us to the Mackerel Islands, a forty-five minute boat trip from Onslow.
- Cabins are spacious, air-conditioned, have their own kitchen with a fridge and freezer, a brilliant deck space overlooking a fantastic view, and are powered by solar energy.
- In the island’s recent history Chevron had oil and gas facilities on the island, leaving the island with an amazing solar power system, a desal water supply, and a set up for anyone looking for the glamp desert island experience.
- It’s the home base to one of the world’s great fishing destinations, the waters teeming with marine life of all kinds. The rugged landscape can also be explored.
- At the end of July the waters nearby see whale migration as hump back whales move through with their calves. The island runs tours during this time, usually through to October.
- The island has a general store which offers basics such as bread and milk, or you can order catering packages which caters for three meals a day and the fresh produce gets delivered to your room.
- The beach is alive with nesting turtles in January and February, and then the babies hatch and make their way to the water in April and May.
- The Mackerel Islands have only just opened up to tourism again after many years or servicing the oil and gas sector.
- Direct flights are now available from Perth to Onslow. Daily boat transfers to the island from Onslow via Onslow Beach Resort.
