Story: The Races WA Country Cup Stories in Derby
Episode: 8
Presenter: Nikki Parkinson
Air Date: 31st March 2024

Nikki takes us to Derby and shows the vast landscapes that defy imagination

  • Nikki showcases the Kimberly region with its vast landscapes that defy imagination, cascading waterfalls that plunge into pristine pools, ancient canyons carved by time, and rocks that tells stories older than history itself.
  • Air travel is the main way to travel to the Kimberly. The gateway way of the Kimberly, Broome, includes the world-famous Cable beach and picture-perfect landscape.
  • In the Northeast of Kimberly, Kununurra resides, a town with amazing multicultural history attached to the space. The True ‘Wild West’ town is set on banks of Lake Kununurra and the Mighty Ord River.
  • The Derby Cup is held only once a year so it's one of the most popular races in Kununurra at the time. There are no VIP’s, which encourages everyone to join in the colour and spectacle of the day.
  • The Derby Cup includes six races, fashions on the field, kids and adult foot races, and live music after the last race.
  • Located 21000km northeast of Perth, Locals gather in large groups from neighbouring towns to experience the Derby Cup at the racecourse once every year in June.
