Christmas on the Canal

Story: Christmas on the Canal
Episode: 8
Presenter: Jo Beth Taylor
Air Date: 12 December 2021

With huge displays and lights sparkling off the water, The Christmas Lights Trail in Mandurah is by far the best in WA! Jo Beth enjoys a cruise along the canal to view the spectacular displays.

  • The Mandurah lights trail came about in the late ’90s by inspiration from the local community who wanted to do something different in the area. Hence, residents started putting up Christmas lights on their houses along the canal.
  • There are approximately 200 houses that get involved each year for the light show.
  • The local Mandurah residents put in a staggering amount of effort dressing up their houses for Christmas – all at their own expense.
  • Some residents spend 80-human hours setting up over 100 lights, using 15-time clocks powered by 30 power boards.
  • Make sure to look out for the water wishing well – set up by the local Rotary Club, all proceeds are donated to local charities.
  • To view the displays, visitors can choose between a selection of boats including; the Mandurah Cruises, private charter boats, an Eco BBQ Boat, or even a pirate ship.
  • The Mandurah Light Trail runs until the 9th of January 2022.
