- Significant investment is currently being directed into the Spoilbank Marina project in Port Hedland, which aims to transform the waterfront of Port Hedland into a dynamic hub for both residents and visitors to gather and enjoy recreational activities.
- The new facilities planned for the marina include a state-of-the-art four-lane boat ramp accessible at all tides, boat pens for secure mooring, and a public fishing jetty designed to enhance the recreational boating experience.
- Additionally, the project encompasses a substantial car park area tailored to meet the needs of recreational boat owners, a new navigational channel that ensures safety by separating recreational boating traffic from the main shipping channel of Port Hedland.
- Onshore amenities are set to include community recreation spaces, versatile event areas, a scenic waterfront promenade adorned with public artwork and cultural gathering spaces, as well as essential amenities like toilets, fish cleaning stations, and wash-down areas.
- The initial phase, including the boat ramp, car park, and access road, opened in January 2024. The subsequent phase, scheduled for mid-2024, will introduce the boat pens and public fishing jetty. The final phase, anticipated for late 2024, will complete the marina's vision, creating a vibrant foreshore area.
- Traditional Owners represented by the Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation have played a crucial role in the project, contributing culturally significant public artwork that reflects the region's rich heritage and enhances the marina's appeal.
- The Spoilbank Marina project aims not only to improve lifestyle opportunities for residents of Port Hedland but also to challenge the town's industrial stereotype by making it an attractive destination for both locals and tourists seeking adventure, relaxation, or a blend of both experiences.
