When we hear the words Port Hedland, we mainly associate it with Iron Ore, and a lot of it! Even though there are industry tours that circumnavigate the entire port, there’s so much more to it then just mining.
- A natural event in the region mesmerizes locals and visitors alike each year on Port Hedland’s waterfront. From October to March, turtles nest before new hatchlings head out to sea on Port Hedland’s Cemetery Beach.
- Flatback turtles have been nesting around Cemetery Beach for a very long time, far before the mining industry began and far before Port Hedland was found and built by Settlers.
- Care for Hedland runs a community supported monitoring program, where volunteers can help out during the evenings, identifying turtles that have come to nest on the beach.
- With kilometres of coastline, accessible by four wheel drive and on foot, fishing, dive fishing and crabbing is an especially popular activity in Port Hedland.
