Perth Hill’s Road trip

Story Title – Perth Hill’s Road trip
Episode – 5, TX date: 11th August 19
Presenter – Quentin Long

Quentin takes us on a road trip through the Perth Hills and discovers a different perspective on the Perth experience.

  • The hills are another gem of Perth. In a quick 40-minute drive from the CBD, you find yourself in rolling hills and countryside and amongst a burgeoning food and wine scene.
  • The Perth Hills are bookended by Armadale in the South, and Mundaring in the North.
  • The drive between them is stunning. Traversing two national parks and a state forest, you coast through glades of eucalyptus trees and undulating hills and come out amongst vines and orchards.
  • Amongst all this are cute little towns, each offering a host of excellent places for a coffee or meal, or just meander through the collection of eclectic shops and art galleries.
  • Being elevated to almost 400 meters above sea level means this is great fruit growing country, so the area is full of vineyards and cideries.
  • Most of the cellar doors can be found in the Bickley and Carmel Valleys near the town of Kalamunda, almost half way between Mundaring and Armadale.
  • One of the most innovative and interesting produces of wine in the hills is Myattsfield Vineyards.
  • The elevation of the area, along with the darling scarp, which shelters us from the maritime winds, offers a unique continental style climate. This allows for more innovation in production.
  • One of the latest products by Myattsfield Vineyards is Mystelle, which is a brandied fortified juice, which they are selling as an aperitif style cocktail, or a base for cocktail mixes.
  • For lunch, head to the hills most celebrated and picturesque restaurant The Vineyard Kitchen, at Brookside cellar door.
  • This is a unique environment that will be an evolving destination in the next three to five years.
