The Wheatbelt Way

Segment: The Wheatbelt Way
Presenter: Christina Morrissy

Covering 800km of WA countryside, the Wheatbelt Way is a road trip in our Golden Outback  that is full of interesting history and stories.

  • The trip tends to start in Dowerin, home to the nation’s biggest agricultural field day. Look out for Rusty the Tin Dog, a large statue that was inspired by the nearby tin creek – named due to the miners that would throw their empty beef tins into it.
  • The tiny town of Korda is a great place for an overnight stopover, with the pub doing a top-notch meal and it also features one of WA’s five remaining drive-in theatres, where you can watch the latest movies under a canopy of stars.
  • 30kms on you’ll find Bencubbin. There have been three meteorites, classified as Bencubbin’s, found in the fields around the town, and you can check out the remains for yourself.
  • When there is a limited supply of timber, builders have to get a bit creative. The Pergandes Sheepyards were built using slabs of local granite, with the farmer using fire to crack the slabs of granite from the land behind the yards.
  • Westonia sprung to life in the early 1900s on the back of the regions first major gold strike. Many of its buildings are over a century old, but many are new. The Westonian’s love the style so much that they passed a law requiring all shopfronts to be modelled in the 1020s style.
  • If you’re interested in doing the whole loop, it’ll take around 4 days. As far as accommodation goes, there are many campgrounds and accommodation providers in the area to stop and stay at, another great road trip to complete in our Golden Outback.
  • If you are looking to do the drive, make sure you download the free Wheatbelt Way App and get planning.
