Title: Halls Creek Town Art
Broadcast: 8th April 2018
Presenter: Chrissy Morrissy
Chrissy continues her great road trip in the north of WA and lands in Halls creek, 683 kilometres from Broome in the heart of the Kimberley.
- For many years Halls Creeks claim to fame has been the fact it’s the intersection of some of the nation’s greatest road trips, The Duncan Road, The Tanami and the Canning Stock Route.
- Dry dusty rough around the edges is Chrissy’s previous perception of this place, though Kevin Kelly and the towns local artists are helping to change pre-perceptions, through some very colorful installations.
- The newly built Yarliyil Art Centre is home to some serious talent with art pieces highly sought after around the globe and Kevin has spent almost three decades in Halls Creek working with Indigenous artists and is full of praise for their talent.
- On walking through the town, it is almost like a library of stories has been painted on the walls of the local shops and fences and they have been donated for the community and visitors to enjoy.
- The aim of the project is to involve everybody in town, open up the art center and help the center to progress as a community organization
- Even the rubbish bins have been transformed and hand painted recycled car bonnets are utilised as signs directing tourists from place to place.
- Natural white quartz, aptly named ‘the China Wall’ rises out of the ground, and in some places up to 6 meters high, it’s a great place to explore and is one of the many beautiful places in the Kimberley that are inspirational to many artists.
- Up here you get a real understanding of why people are so connected to this land and why it inspires them so much, there are many reasons why you should make Halls Creek a stop on your Kimberley road trip.
