Pink Lake Buggy Tours

Story: Pink Lake Buggy Tours
Episode: 09
Presenter: Nikki Parkinson
Air Date: 18th July 2021

Just over one hour north of Geraldton is the beachside fishing village of Port Gregory. Nikki shows us the best way to explore the Pink Lake, Hutt Lagoon, in a side-by-side buggy…

  • Port Gregory is an ocean lover’s playground, with a swimming beach, water ski area and five kilometres of exposed natural reef!
  • Hutt Lagoon is also known as the Pink Lake, which is actually a Salt Lake. Depending on the weather and time of day, the colour can change from pale pink to deep purple.
  • Pink Lake Buggy Tours leave from the Port Gregory Caravan Park and take you on an adventure though the sand dunes and along the coastline.
  • Port Gregory is also a fishing hotspot! You can catch anything from Whiting, Tailor, Mulloway, Snapper, Coral Trout, Dhufish and Blue-Bone.
  • Hutt Lagoon's iconic colouring comes from the presence of Dunaliella Salina, which is a source of beta-carotene; a food-colouring agent and a great source of Vitamin A.
  • The best time to visit Hutt Lagoon is on a clear day, around mid-morning when the sun is high.
  • Hutt Lagoon covers roughly 70 square kilometres, with most of the lagoon lying a few metres below sea level.
  • Hutt Lagoon is actually separated from the Indian Ocean by a beach barrier ridge and barrier dune system.
  • Hut Lagoon has an active wildlife, with birds like black-winged stilts, banded stilts and avocets catching insects and tiny crustaceans on the Salt Lake waters.
