The Great South West Edge of WA is home to one of Australia’s most epic stretches of coastal road, starting in the heart of one of the state’s prettiest towns – Esperance.

• The 40km drive runs along the western beaches and home around the back of Esperance. One of the best ways to do the drive is in reverse, saving the beaches for the end.
• Esperance’s Rotary Lookout lets you see both the start and the end of the drive, before heading back along the town’s revamped foreshore, stopping off to inspect the latest art exhibition at the Cannery Arts Centre.
• Though it isn’t on the map, it is well worth stopping off to see the local artist Cindy Poole. She is incredible talented with glass, creating both small and large pieces, such as the large whale tale in Esperance.
• It’s also a good idea to stop off at the Lucky Bay Brewery. Named after one of the south coast’s more famous beaches, this is a quirky little brewery where you can get a tour of the operation before sitting back to enjoy a few cold drinks.
• If you’re doing the drive in reverse, your first beach will be 11 Mile. This is a great beach at all times of the day, though it’s extra special when the tide is out – you can go fishing off the reef, and the water forms a still lagoon perfect for swimming and beach combing.
• The next few beaches along the drive are 10, 9 and 8 Mile, with one of them being clothing optional. Twilight Cove is the reason why locals tell everyone to do the drive back to front, as it is absolutely spectacular when the sun starts going down.
