The legendary Mackerel Islands epitomise the West Australian coastal lifestyle, with some of the best fishing and diving you will ever find.

• The Mackerel Islands are a wildlife wonderland – it is a gazetted nature reserve and is known as the region’s ‘Turtle Highway’. Nestled among coral reefs, the islands are visited by sea turtles, dolphins, whales, dugongs, stingrays and colourful fish. You may even find some ta-ta lizards playing around your accommodation.
• Start your day by visiting the Island activity centre and the general store. It is here that you can hire out gear to undertake activities such as snorkelling and paddle boarding.
• If you’re looking for a great family activity, you can take a Plaka boat trip to go out and spot marine life – you’re guaranteed to see a lot of beautiful fish.
• The sports fishing in the Mackerel Chain is amazing, and will provide an unforgettable experience. Fish in the area include the tomato cod, mackerel and tuna, as well as big hitters like marlin and sailfish.
• Comprising of 10 islands and atolls scattered 22km off the mainland of Onslow, 2 of the islands welcome guests. You can stay in a choice of beachside cabins on Thevenard Island, or if you’re looking for the ultimate wilderness experience you can rent Direction Island and enjoy the serenity.
• The islands are easy to reach – just a 2-hour flight north of Perth with a 45-minute ferry transfer out of Onslow, although if you’re interested you can bring your own boat and hire a mooring.
