If you’re on the Golden Quest Heritage trail you might discover this place south of Menzies just under an hour from Kalgoorlie is the Goongarrie station stay a great place to base yourself for a night as you explore the region.

• Its position on the edge of the Western Woodlands and the Murchison Woodlands allows access to the home of 1 fifth of all plant species in Australia.
• The Western Woodland covers 16 million hectares, to put into perspective its equivalent to the size of England.
• Goongarrie station was founded in 1924 and covers some 100,000 hectares, it was never really a viable sheep station but was a base for the mining boom and once housed hotels, stores and houses.
• The nearby salt lakes are spectacular, this ancient causeway would have been a path for people moving across this waterway for thousands of years.
• This huge Kurrajong would be hundreds of years old. It would have been a beacon to aboriginal people passing through during dry times. These trees store huge amounts of moisture in their trunks and swollen roots
• It’s not just people passing through on holidays that appreciate this place. Voluntourism is a massive thing these days. Rodger and Kayleen are the caretakers here and love the chance to explore the region whilst volunteering to look after the facilities here.
