Mandjoogoordap Dreaming

Episode: 8
Title: Mandjoogoordap Dreaming
Broadcast: 25th March 2018
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

If you are looking for a day trip that takes you back 3.5 billion years it’s well worth packing the car up and heading south just over an hour to Lake Clifton in the simply stunning Mandurah Peel region.

  • Every Saturday you can take the Mandjoogoordap Dreaming tour which runs from 10.30am to 1pm. Started back in 2017 George Walley’s guided tour of this area and its proving to be very popular..
  • The first stop on the journey involves my favourite thing - food with a unique Aussie twist. George makes muffins with local bush tucker to enjoy at the river. George tells the story of the rainbow serpent whom Indigenous Australians believe created this landscape.
  • The next stop is a landscape some describe as being from an another planet. It is a single cell bacteria that used to rule the planet.
  • It's the strange living rocks in the water here that has people amazed. This place features Stromatolites and thrombolites, primitive lifeforms that are known prokaryotes, or Cyanobacteria, a single cell bacteria which inhabited the Earth about 2.5 to 3.8 billion years ago, during Archean epoch, probably the most ancient and primitive organisms on the planet and only still found in a few places like this.
  • There are two stories to this part of the world. The first is the story of the Woggal, the rainbow serpent of this region. They believe this area is where she layed to rest after creating the waterways and the thrombolites are her eggs. The thrombolites have scientifically proved to be over 4,000 years old.
  • George also plays the didgeridoo to help people in immersing themselves in the cultural value of the region. It’s a great day trip or stop off on your way down south!
