Go Cultural Tours

Episode: 6
Title: Go Cultural Tours
Broadcast: 11th March 2018
Presenter: Chrissy Morrissy

The view from Kings Park is stunning and it is a great place to check out all of the adventures going on in the city. For todays adventure, Chrissy removes all of the buildings from the landscape and builds something very special, thanks to guide, Walter McGuire from Go Cultural Tours Perth.

  • Walter takes Chrissy for a 90 minute walk through the footsteps of his ancestors in Perths Elizabeth Quay.
  • The Noongar peoples history goes back a very long time and the city has been built on Noongar land and culture and through that there are many stores and sacred areas.
  • The first stop on the tour is the water playground. There is a collaboration of art that is both Noongar and Western. The tiles in the playground tell the stories of the Noongar six seasons.
  • From the 1920s to the 1950s the area of Elizabeth Quay became a prohibited area where Noongar Aboriginal people had to have a native pass to enter. Walter’s father can still remember those days and it has reflected on the children as they are warned when walking through the city.
  • There are yellow signs throughout the Quay that have some of the points that are covered off in the tour.
  • There is also a variety of art work throughout the tour. All of these art works have a strong indigenous meaning. Walter encourages tour guests to reflect on the variety of meanings and emotions attached to the meaning.
  • The tour also touches on some Aboriginal artefacts and what they were used for before concluding at looking at the water and the colours meaning.
