Walk Trails- Northern Beaches

Episode: 6
Title: Walk Trails- Northern Beaches
Broadcast: 3rd September 2017
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane

Trevor explores the Rottnest Island walking trails with guide Ezra on the Karlinyah Bidi walking trail.

  • The Northern Beaches Walk Trail has beautiful beaches and wildlife. There is also a chance to learn about the local history and culture with a tour guide.
  • Trevor’s guide is Ezra. He explains that noongar people have been coming to the island since before it was an island over 25,000 years ago.
  • The 6-kilometer walk has many beautiful sandy beaches and lagoons and takes about two to two and a half hours to complete.
  • Karlinyah means warmth and was named this because the north side of the Island is much warmer as it sees the sun more often.
  • The island is a place where deceased Indigenous ancestor spirits travel to the afterlife. The spirits make a journey from the east to the west end of the island where they then transition to a place called Kooranup, out under the ocean. This walk mimics this path.
