Episode: Absolute Gold Special
Broadcast: 13th November 2015
Presenter: Christina Morrissy
Chrissy visits the town where time stood still and home to the biggest gold mine outside of Kalgoorlie, Gwalia.
- For more than 60 years Gwalia was a hive of activity for over 1,200 people then, literally overnight, the shacks and workshops were abandoned when the mine shut down.
- While tourists are unable to stay in the townsite, 300 metres up the hill is accommodation, nestled on the edge of an open cut mine. Hoover House, museum and tea rooms by day and a unique bed and breakfast by night.
- Hoover House was designed and built by the 31st President of the United States of America, who happened to be the mine manager at Gwalia and left behind both an amazing home and story.
- Guests can stay in one of the two rooms, which are decked out as they would have been back in time when Hoover was around, although now they have the modern utilities like bathrooms.
