Story: Perth's Premier Waterfront
Episode: 25
Presenter: Kate Mac
Air Date: 18th August 2024
Kate spends an evening at Elizabeth Quay, tasting and viewing her way around all it has to offer.
- Elizabeth Quay is Perth’s premier waterfront destination, enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. It's designed to be a gathering place for the community, featuring open spaces, recreational areas and waterfront promenades.
- Connecting the City to the Swan River, it serves as a meeting place for friends and families to exercise, get dinner, and experience the many aboriginal art pieces including “First Contact” by renowned Laurel Nannup.
- First Contact was inspired by the Noongar people's first visions of European settlers, whose distant sailing ships looked like floating birds bearing the white-faced spirits of their ancestors. The artwork is a significant cultural landmark, symbolising the meeting of cultures and the city’s rich heritage.
- Located on the inlet’s eastern edge, The Island offers a unique waterfront and city skyline view of the Swan River. The venue includes a microbrewery, pizzeria, and beer garden, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
- The Island boasts a rich history, originally a part of the Florence Hummerston Kiosk, being a heritage-listed building that was meticulously dismantled, relocated, and reconstructed at Elizabeth Quay.
- Alongside The Island is the pedestrian and cyclist bridge connecting the northern and southern sides of the quay, offering stunning panoramic views of the city and the river.
