Historical Onslow

Story: Historical Onslow
Episode: 22
Presenter: Christina Morrissy
Air Date: 7th July 2024

Chrissy travels through regional Onslow to get a sense of the town history.

  • On 11 January 1924, Onslow was officially gazetted at its current location, which was chosen for its deeper waters and ideal conditions for constructing a new jetty. The relocation of the town from its original site was prompted by the need for a more reliable location for importing and exporting commodities like wool and pearl shell.
  • The journey to the new site involved the people of Onslow transporting their belongings by horses, camels, and donkey-drawn wagons, leaving Old Onslow as a testament to its rich history that can still be visited today.
  • In 2024, Onslow celebrates its 100th anniversary and has flourished into a connected, coastal, and vibrant town, embodying the spirit of resilience and progress with a population of over 800 people.
  • The town offers various accommodation options, including beachfront camping, the Onslow Beach Resort, Sun Chalets, and Ocean View Caravan Park. There is something to suit every traveler’s preference.
  • Old Onslow (built in 1885) is an easy 40-minute drive past the scenic Ashburton River from the current town site, and it has been 100 years since the door shut one last time on the Old Onslow police station and gaol.
  • While the stone buildings of Old Onslow were left behind, the wooden and iron buildings were physically dragged by camel train to form the foundations of the new town, including the old goods shed.
  • In New Onslow, the visitors center (cross museum) is also a great place if you’re into local art and produce. The museum houses quirky treasures, some of which are self-explanatory, while others require a bit more explanation.
  • Onslow is one destination where getting up early is worth the effort on a number of fronts. Whether it’s to sit and soak up the magical first moments of the day at the ANZAC Memorial or to drop a line in the still of the morning, Onslow offers a unique experience for everyone.
