Onslow Adventures

Story: Onslow Adventures
Episode: 22
Presenter: Christina Morrissy
Air Date: 7th July 2024

Chrissy has an adventurous day out in Onslow.

  • Onslow is celebrating 100 years of history and community with a population of just over 800 residents, marking a significant milestone for the town and its people.
  • On 11 January 1924, Onslow was officially gazetted at its current location, signifying an important chapter in its history. This move was driven by the need for a more reliable location for importing and exporting commodities such as wool and pearl shell.
  • Located only 80 km off the Northwest Highway, Onslow is a perfect stopover between towns and an excellent place to break up a road trip. Visitors can start their day in Onslow by heading to the beach for a refreshing swim or fishing session.
  • The rest of the day can be spent exploring the coastline, which is considered one of Western Australia's best-kept secrets, through activities such as snorkeling on the Ningaloo Reef, 4WDing through rugged landscapes, and camping under the stars in the Outback.
  • Fishing is a major attraction in Onslow, with numerous spots to try. The Mackerel Islands, just 22 km offshore, are popular among anglers who catch everything from barramundi and Spanish mackerel to prized game fish like marlin and sailfish.
  • Onslow is one of the best locations in Western Australia to witness the spectacular Staircase to the Moon phenomenon. During certain times of the year, the full moon rises over exposed tidal flats, creating the illusion of a staircase leading to the moon.
  • Onslow holds historical significance as the most southerly town in Australia to be bombed by the Japanese during World War II. The town has a beautiful memorial dedicated to those who fought for future generations.
  • Onslow, commonly known as the gateway to the Mackerel Islands, has an unique appeal that draws many visitors. Those who come for a fishing holiday often find themselves captivated by the town and opt for a complete sea change.
