Story: Perth’s Swan Bells
Episode: 4
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
Air Date: 3rd March 2024
Trevor shares his favourite place in WA, Elizabeth Quay, and gets to ring one of the Bell Tower bells.
- Elizabeth Quay was launched in 2016 with great expectations, costing $2.6 billion to build the 2.7 hectare inlet and it’s comprehensive surroundings, including a range of hotels, restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and unique high-end shops.
- Elizabeth Quay is the launching pad for ferries to the South Perth Foreshore as well as Rottnest Island.
- The bells at the Bell Tower have a history dating back to the 14th century, with one of the bells arriving from one of London’s most famous churches in Trafalgar Square, the St. Martin in the Fields Church, where it rang for 275 years.
- The Bell Tower is home to a range of different sized bells, the lightest weighing 240 pounds (108 kgs) and the heaviest weighing 280 pounds (127 kgs)
- Every day the Bell Tower has multiple bell-chiming times, usually 10:30am, 11am, and 1:30pm which visitors can attend, professional Bell Ringers only attend on Thursdays and Sundays, and on Sunday mornings between 10-11:30 there are lessons for the professionals to teach prospective ringers how to ring a bell.
