Rottnest is not just a nature lovers’ paradise but a place of significant cultural history. Carmen hops on a segway tour to find out more about the history of the Island and its wildlife.
- Segway Tours on Rottnest now operate new tours for Summer including Sunset Tours, and the Fortress Adventure Tour.
- The Segway Tours WA on the Fortress Tour departs from central Thomson Bay, just left of Dome Café, and takes visitors off-road.
- Segways are eco-friendly and allow visitors to reach the most inaccessible parts of Rottnest with ease.
- These revolutionary vehicles are a great way to see Rottnest’s beautiful flora and fauna without the need to walk or use peddle power.
- The Fortress Tour takes 2 hours and explores the military history of the island as you ride.
- The Island played a military role in both World Wars. It was an internment and prisoner of war camp during WW1.
- The barracks were built in 1936-7, completed before Australians entered WW2. These days the dormitories at the barracks are a popular destination for school camps.
- Along with segwaying, visitors can take one of Paul’s eco-e bike tours or a free walking tour with one of Rottnest’s volunteer guides.
- Quokkas were mistaken as rats by the first Europeans to visit the area, hence the name Rat’s nest, aka Rottnest.
