Great South West Edge

Segment: Great South West Edge
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
TX Date: 6th January 2019

The Great South West Edge is considered to be one of the most beautiful road trips in the world, and with good reason, and Trevor is only covering a small part of it.

  • The Valley of the Giants features huge 400-year old red tingle trees. There is a 600m walk that takes you up into the canopy 40m above the forest floor. Being up in the canopy can alter your mood, with the trees releasing beneficial hormones known as anions.
  • The beautiful town of Denmark is one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots, possessing a rich and threatened reservoir of plant and animal life. On any one day you could discover dolphins, seals, southern right and humpback whales playing in the waters within view of the shore.
  • Greens Pool is stunning, featuring warm, peppermint tinged water. It is protected by the large rocks surrounding it making it a favoured location for the Denmark locals to do their morning laps.
  • Just a 5-minute walk from Greens Pool lies Elephant Rocks. These rocks are named due to their resemblance to a herd of elephants bathing in the water, and they are truly spectacular.
  • Just near Albany you’ll find The Gap, a natural wonder that everyone should see at least once in their life. Nearby is also a natural bridge, carved out of the granite rock by the ocean smashing into it over hundreds of thousands of years.
  • The further east you travel, the more exciting things you’ll find. Bremer Bay is home to one of the most remarkable gatherings of marine life on the planet, with orcas gathering in feeding frenzies you can observe from the comfort of a sightseeing cruise. There is also Fitzgerald National Park, home to unique flora.
  • Why not take this epic road trip from Perth to Esperance and discover the Great South West Edge for yourself?
