Peedamulla Campground

Segment: Peedamulla Campground
Presenter: Trevor Cochrane
TX Date: 16th December 2018

Trevor visits Peedamulla Campground in the Pilbara Region of WA and learns about the area and camping with custodians’ program.

  • Camping with Custodians is a Tourism WA initiative that enables visitors to stay on Aboriginal lands and interact with the Indigenous owners.
  • Peedamulla means ‘plenty water’ in the local language and this is an area where the Cane River runs through 226,000 hectares of cattle station.
  • The campground is managed by its owners the Parker family and is located between Carnarvon and Karratha – it is the only Camping with Custodians experience in the Pilbara.
  • Campground manager Preston Parker spends his time with visitors sharing stories of his people and their land. He runs a campfire yarn, which is one of the most popular parts of the experience.
  • The campgrounds are a great place to absorb the local culture and environment and Peedamulla offers both powered and unpowered sites, as well as hot showers, gas barbeques and modern amenities.
  • The Parkers offer tag along tours, taking visitors all the way down to the coast. The area is absolutely beautiful, with creeks running out to the sea full of oysters and mud crabs.
  • Camping with Custodians creates income for Aboriginal communities, as well as giving the opportunity to showcase the local culture. For guests, it provides the opportunity to meet and interact with Aboriginal people on their traditional lands, a unique experience in the Pilbara.
