Windjana Gorge

Segment: Windjana Gorge
Presenter: Christina Morrissy
Date: 25th November 2018

The Kimberly is home to dozens of magnificent gorges, and luckily, one of the most spectacular is one of the easiest to get to.

  • Just a 2-hour drive from either Derby or Fitzroy Crossing, Windjana Gorge cuts through the Napier Range, and is part of ancient reef system dating back 350 million years, home to a huge amount of wildlife.
  • It is the site of Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra’s last stand.
  • The dramatic entry through narrow gap in rocks only adds to the mystery of the adventure. There are several walking trails to explore, all well signposted, with the longest trail being an easy 7km return journey along the side of the riverbed, though many of best spots are less than 20-minute walk from the entrance.
  • Kids will love exploring the base of the cliffs that form the sides of the 3.5km long gorge. There are fossils embedded in the walls, evidence of time of when the land was at the bottom of the Devonian Sea.
  • The first pool along the riverbed, at Bandigan Rock, provides a 360-degree view of the Gorge. The near vertical cliffs reach heights of almost 100m, and geologists regard the site as one of the classic features of world geology.
  • During the wet season, the gorge is completely unrecognisable, as the Lennard River rips through the gorge and onto the surrounding plains. During the dry season the water evaporates, leaving behind isolated pools of water.
  • The gorge is open from May to early November with a campground available 500 metres from the cliffs, and it is well worth making a trip out there.
  • Looking for the ultimate history lesson and tour of the area? Windjana Tours offers incredible day trips that showcase Windjana Gorge and nearby Tunnel Creek, leaving from a number of locations in the region. Make sure you check out their website for more details.
