The Rock – Mt Augustus

Title: The Rock – Mt Augustus
Broadcast Date: 11th November 18
Presenter: Christina Morrissy

Rebecca discovers the amazing sights of Mt Augustus, the largest rock on Earth right here in our Golden Outback.

  • Given the vast size of WA, it’s not surprising that the biggest rock in the world is right here in our backyard.
  • The Rock is around 8km long and covers an area of almost 5,000 hectares, making it twice the size of Uluru.
  • Mt Augustus is known as Burringurrah to the local Wadjari Aboriginal people and is located 390km north west of Meekatharra, tucked away in Mt Augustus National Park.
  • Surrounding Mt Augustus is a 49kilometre loop drive, which is packed full of walking trails should you wish to take a little more of a challenge.
  • One of the stops you can make is Flintstone Rock Walk, a massive slab that once upon a time found its way across a dry creek bed. The trick here is to crawl beneath it, wait a few moments and to look around as it is here you can see Aboriginal engravings carved deep into the dusty red rock.
  • Gum Grove is another great stop and the trail here leads walkers through an expansive grove of giant white-barked river red gums, the cascading trees offer welcoming shade from the hot sun and you can hear the abundance of birds chirping away in the trees.
  • If you like the ultimate challenge you can hike all the way to the summit of Mt Augustus, it’s a 12km six-hour return journey and is not for the faint hearted.
  • If you plan to spend the night at Mt Augustus then the Mt Augustus Tourist Park is the place to be. The accommodation is situated at the base of the rock and is a fantastic base for outback adventures in the National Park. It also supplies fuel and basic grocery items.
  • If you want to check out the rock for yourself, a 4wd is highly recommended and make sure you come prepared with a spare tyre, extra food and water and most importantly tell someone where you are going.
  • An explore of Mt Augustus and the road to the rock is a trip you will definitely want to add to your bucket list.
