RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort

Episode: 2
Title: RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort
Broadcast: 11th February 2018
Presenter: Chrissy Morrissy

  • 9 hours north of Perth, right on the beach of the World Heritage Listed Shark bay, is the RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort with a very special draw card: friendly, playful dolphins. Monkey Mia is the holiday destination every kid should come to, even big kids too.
  • Many years ago, fisherman would throw the local dolphins a fish or two. Now, three times a day, almost every day of the year, dolphins congregate to the beach for a feed.
  • The well-being of the dolphins is the priority, so marine biologists do their part for conservation and education.
  • The dolphins are indopacific bottle-nose dolphins, one of the smaller species of dolphins, and they call the Monkey Mia their home.
  • The number of dolphins on the beach differs day to day, between 2-12 a day. There are only 2-4 days in the year that dolphins do not appear in the area.
  • The Parks and Wildlife Service provide a dolphin experience where you are invited to enter the water and listen to a 20 minute talk to teach you a bit about the dolphins. At the end of the talk, fish are fed to the dolphins giving visitors a chance to have the dolphins swim around them.
  • Dolphin feeding times are not consistent, so please check with the RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort staff for more information.
